(LANSING) – The City of Sturgis has received funds from the State of Michigan to help out with their splash pad project.
On Monday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced that 16 communities around the State were receiving nearly $2 million in Recreation Passport Grants. Sturgis is one of the communities and will be getting $150,000.
The grant money will be used to help with the cost of constructing and installing a splash pad, which will be put in near the Doyle Community Center and Thurston Woods Park.
According to preliminary designs, the splash pad will be approximately 2,500 square feet and cost $280,000. The project will also include an expansion of the parking lot facility, storm retention basins, sidewalks and a bathroom, which will cost around $500,000.
Funding for the Passport Grant program comes from the sale of the Recreation Passport, which is required for vehicles to enter Michigan's 103 State Parks, 140 State Forest campgrounds along with hundreds of miles of state trails, boating access sites, historic sites and other outdoor spaces.
