(CENTREVILLE) - September 11, 2001 was the day four coordinated attacks by militant group al-Qaeda happened in the United States.
Twenty-five years later, a Community Remembrance Ceremony was held at Glen Oaks Community College. The event was co-sponsored by Glen Oaks and the St. Joseph County United Way.
Glen Oaks President Dr. Bryan Newton started off the program by sharing with the audience that 9-11 changed America forever. Newton says following 9-11 America lost its sense of certainty.
St. Joseph County United Way Executive Director Kelly Hostetler spoke about the people that day that ran towards danger. She says they and those who continue to do that need to be remembers and honored. (Hostetler says we need to take the time and tell first responders Thank You for what they do.
The Keynote Speaker was St. Joseph County Sheriff Chad Spence, who was on road patrol when he heard about the attacks. Spence says he finally understands what it truly means to serve and why people are willing to do it. Spence says it's a matter of service above self.
The ceremony also featured singer Malashia Cain performing "America The Beautiful" and a bagpipe player.
