(WHITE PIGEON TOWNSHIP) – A missing kayaker has been found, thanks to a coordinated multi-agency search.
St. Joseph County Sheriff Chad Spence says at 7 PM Wednesday his office received a report of a missing kayaker, who had failed to return after a trip along the Fawn River. A large scale search and rescue operation was launched. Assisting agencies included the White Pigeon Police Department, the Sheriff’s Office Dive Rescue Unit, the Indiana DNR and Life Care Ambulance. In addition drone technology and ground crews were utilized to search for the missing individual.
After several hours, the kayaker was located safely and evaluated by medical personnel at the scene. No serious injuries were reported.
Spence praised the swift and effective response, stating he and his office are grateful for the successful outcome and the teamwork demonstrated by all agencies involved.
Spence also says this incident is a timely reminder of the importance of preparation and awareness when engaging in water -related activities.
If you plan on being on the rivers, lakes and waterways around the area, Spence is urging the public to take proper precautions to stay safe on the water. That includes: Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket; Never paddle or swim alone and always let someone know your plans; Avoid alcohol while boating, kayaking, or swimming; Monitor weather and river conditions before heading out; Bring a charged cell phone or communication device in a waterproof case; and Be aware of your surroundings and know your limits.
