Cass County Sheriff Clint Roach says just after 6 PM Monday, his office was called to investigate a crash near the intersection of U.S. 12 and M-217. The investigation revealed that 42 year old James Hettmansperger of Vandalia was driving a Jeep Liberty east on U.S. 12 and lost control of the vehicle, crossing the centerline. The Jeep then struck the rear end of a GMC Sierra pickup and trailer driven by 44 year old Brett White of Elkhart who was traveling westbound on U.S. 12.
The Jeep left the roadway, coming to rest next to a utility pole.
The SEPSA Fire Department and SEPSA EMS attempted life-saving measures but Hettmansperger was pronounced dead on scene.
Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
