Saturday, October 11, 2025

(COLDWATER) – A driver was arrested Friday morning following a crash that happened on I-69.

Coldwater Director of Public Safety Joe Scheid says witnesses called 911 at 12:30 AM to report a reckless driver approaching the City of Coldwater. The witnesses says the vehicle ran off the road and into a ditch, before driving back onto the interstate.

A Coldwater Police Officer responded to the area and found the suspect travelling north in the southbound lanes near the U.S. 12 interchange. The officer turned on his lights and siren and followed the suspect vehicle north at a speed of 45 MPH. He used his emergency lights to warn oncoming traffic about the wrong way driver.

A southbound tractor-trailer, driven by a 58 year old Sterling Heights man, saw the wrong way vehicle and patrol car, and attempted to stop to avoid a collision. The suspect drove head first into the semi near the State Street overpass.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 35 year old Coldwater woman, was treated at Insight Hospital Coldwater. When she was released, she was arrested for driving while intoxicated, and lodged in the Branch County Jail.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

Assisting at the scene were the Branch County Sheriff's Office, the Coldwater Fire Department, the Quincy Police Department, Michigan State Police and Life Care Ambulance.
