Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb announced that the special election will be to fill the seat of U.S. Congresswoman Jackie Walorski of Elkhart, who was elected to represent the U.S. Second Congressional District of Indiana.
Walorski and three other people were killed in a two vehicle crash that happened August 3 on State Road 19 south of State Road 119. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department determined the SUV Walorki was in crossed the center line and collided head on with a north bound passenger car.
Walorski and two members of her staff were in the SUV and were all pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the northbound vehicle, 56 year old Edith Schmucker of Nappanee was also killed in the crash.
Holcomb says the special election will be held during the November 8 General Election. The candidate elected at that time will serve the remainder of Walorski’s term, which ends on January 3, 2023.
The U.S. Second Congressional District of Indiana is made up of Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Miami, Pulaski, Starke, St. Joseph and Wabash Counties. Clerks of the Circuit Courts of those counties, are directed to hold a special election for the vacated office.
