(CENTREVILLE) – Other than one small incident, Tuesday's primary election went well in St. Joseph County.
County Clerk Lindsay Oswald says she was very impressed with the number of people who came out to vote. She was especially encouraged by a large number of first time voters taking part in the election process. LINKC.
Oswald says the only issue on the day was the loss of power at the Sherman Township Hall. She says the City of Sturgis Electric Department came out and set up a generator, allowing them to run their machines while the problem was being fixed.
There were no problems with the social distancing guidelines set up at the polling locations, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Oswald says many voters gave positive comments to election workers on how the locations were set up, and many had masks for citizens in case they forgot to bring their own.
Many of the offices did not have Democratic candidates on the ballot. Oswald says there is still an opportunity for people to run for office by having their name on the November ballot. LINKD.
The final numbers show that 29.68 percent of the registered voters in St. Joseph County cast a ballot in the primary, either at polling locations or by absentee. Oswald says she anticipates that number to be higher for the November election.
