(CENTREVILLE) - Glen Oaks Community College has named Terry Smith its interim men's basketball coach, bringing a veteran of collegiate, professional and high school basketball to the Vikings program. Glen Oaks Athletic Director Devin Wilburn says they think they've got somebody who brings a lot of passion and cares about the game of basketball and helping mold athletes to be successful in life. Smith has nearly four decades of coaching experience, including 19 seasons as a collegiate men's head coach. His career includes more than 300 head coaching victories and a combined 10 championships. Smith says it's exciting taking over a new program and just a chance to do what he loves to do. Smith says his priorities extend beyond basketball. He says the big picture is to create a positive environment and that the kids have a great experience. Wilburn said that approach aligns with Glen Oaks' goals for the program. A member of the Michigan Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame, Smith has served as head men's basketball coach at four colleges, including Lake Superior State University (1991-97), Grand Valley State University (1997-2004), Alma College (2007-10) and Finlandia University (2011-14). Smith compiled a 110-83 record during his seven seasons at Grand Valley State. He also guided Lake Superior State to a 20-8 record during the 1995-96 season. His collegiate coaching career began as an assistant at Ferris State University in 1987-88. He subsequently served as an assistant at Lake Superior State from 1988-91 before being romoted to head coach. Smith also has NCAA Division I women's basketball coaching experience, serving as an assistant at Michigan State University during the 2010-11 season and at the University of Oklahoma during the 2023-24 season. In addition to his collegiate experience, Smith served as boys basketball head coach at Elkhart Central High School in Elkhart, Indiana, from 2016-18. He guided the Blue Blazers to a 21-3 record during the 2016-17 season. Smith has extensive experience in basketball analytics, recruiting and player development. A native of Crystal Falls, Michigan, Smith graduated from Michigan State University in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He also earned graduate degrees from Central Michigan University and Grand Valley State University.
