(BRONSON) - The Bronson City Council voted down a "road diet" project for U.S. 12 during their meeting Monday.
Bronson City Manager Brandon Mersman says the Michigan Department of Transportation brought the proposed plan to the City. It would reduce U.S. 12 from four lanes down to three lanes from Albers Road to Main Street. In addition to just having one travel lane east and west there would be a dedicated turn lane. Mersman says the project is expected to reduce crashes, and give more room for people getting into and out of their vehicles if they park along the street. It will also reduce the number of lanes that pedestrians have to cross.
Members of the Council along those in the audience had questions on the project and voiced concerns. Councilman Larry McConn says he is afraid the change would lead to traffic backups.
The measure was voted down with zero yes votes, 2 no votes and 2 abstentions.
