(COLDWATER) - The recent heavy rainfall has resulted in high water levels on Branch County lakes.

Because of that, Sheriff Fred Blankenship would like to remind all boaters to be mindful of their wake and the impact it can have on shoreline property, docks and other vessels.

Blakenship asks that all boaters be courteous to those who live along the lakes and to operate your boat responsibly.

Michigan Law says the owner of any vessel operated upon the waters of the state is personally responsible for any damage to life or property resulting from a wake or swell created by the negligent operation or propulsion of the vessel, if the vessel is being operated with his or her consent.

Blakenship says during periods of high water, even normal boat wakes can cause significant shoreline erosion and property damage. Slowing down and minimizing your wake can help protect Branch County lakes and the community.
