(LANSING) - Legislation that would make Michigan's free school meals program permanent is moving forward in the State Senate.

The Michigan Senate Education Committee unanimously approved a package of bills this week that would create and fund a permanent statewide program.

Currently, Michigan public schools provide free meals to all students, but the program has not been permanently established in state law. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has urged lawmakers to approve the legislation before she leaves office at the end of the year.

The bills now move to the full Michigan Senate for consideration.
