(STURGIS) - The Sturgis City Commission has set the date for a public hearing to discuss the proposed millage rates.
During their meeting last week, the Commission heard from City Clerk Ken Rhodes, who explains what the City has done in the past regarding the millage rates.
Rhodes says for the last several years the City has included in the public hearing advertisement the maximum millage allowed for City operations and for the streets and sidewalks, because that is the maximum amount you can levy at the public hearing. Rhodes says if you put in a lower amount and then want to have a higher millage rate, you would have to have a second public hearing. (LISTEN ABOVE)
Rhodes says because of the Headlee rollback rule, the highest millage rate Sturgis may consider for City Operating is 11.3939 mills and 2.926 mills for Streets and Sidewalks. In 2025 the City Operating millage rate was 11.0800 and the Streets and Sidewalks millage was 2.9667.
The Commission voted unanimously to hold the public hearing on the millage rates during their June 22 meeting, with the Operating millage advertised at 11.3939 mills and the Streets and Sidewalks at 2.926 mills.
