(CENTREVILLE) - Sentence has been given to a man for his part in the death of a Sturgis child in 2024.

St. Joseph County Circuit Court officials say Frederick Nelson was sentenced on Friday to 40 to 60 months in prison for being an accessory after the fact in the death of two year old Octavia Bohne. Nelson reached a plea deal with the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office on the charge.

Prosecutor's say that following Octavia's death, Nelson urged her mother, and his girlfriend Paige Bohne, to delete incriminating text messages from their cell phones.

In December 2025, Paige Bohne was given a sentence of 225 months to 45 years in prison on a charge of first degree child abuse. She was also sentenced from 4 years and 9 months to 10 years on a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder by suffocation or strangulation.

The sentences are running concurrently.

On November 7, 2024 at 12:47 AM, the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office along with medical first responders were sent to the Memory Lane Trailer Park on West U.S. 12 for an unresponsive child. Attempts to revive the child were unsuccessful, and the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The St. Joseph County Major Crimes Task Force was activated and Bohne was eventually taken into custody.
