(STURGIS) - Financially speaking, the City of Sturgis is doing well.

During their April 22 meeting, the Sturgis City Commission received their annual audit presentation. Justin Smith of Maner Costerisan presented the audit and started by saying Sturgis received an unmodified or clean opinion, which is the highest opinion that can be given.

Smith shared that the City had a fund balance for the year ending September 30, 2025 of $3,720,649. He then gave an overview of the revenues that the City collected. Smith says revenues for the year were $11,026,415, which is an approximately 1% change, or a decrease of $118,000 year over year. He explains that the change was mostly due to intergovernmental revenues decreasing, largely because of a drop in HUD funding by $660,000. (LISTEN ABOVE).

Smith says the expenditures ended the year at $10,311,230 which is an increase of about 6% or $680,000 year over year. The change was because of increases in salaries along with repairs and maintenance to parks which went up 19% or by $73,000 per park.

Smith explained to the Commission that approximately 49% of their revenue was from property tax and marijuana tax. Another 27% was from intergovernmental funds from the State and Federal Governments.
