(STURGIS) - Recycling will continue in the City of Sturgis.

Wednesday night, the Sturgis City Commission approved the second reading of an amendment to the City's Code of Ordinances to allow curbside recycling to continue by a vote of 6-3. The current contract between Sturgis and Bordon Waste Away was set to end on December 31.

The agreement would make the program applicable to properties with one residential unit. That means properties with one, two or three dwelling units such as single family homes, duplexes or tri-plexes.

Under the current contract, Sturgis residents pay $2 per month for recycling. Sturgis City Manager Andrew Kuk shared again with the Commission that with a one year contract, the cost per residence would be $8 per month, and with a three year contract, it would be $6 per month.

The Commission discussed both options before Barry Cox stepped to the microphone and shared the decision comes down to what the Commission is willing to commit to. He shared that with all the low bids on projects the City has approved, he says he can't believed that they would accept a 33% premium under a one year contract, which even with possible increases under a three year contract, the rate would not get to $8 per month. By consensus, the Commission directed Kuk to work with Bordon on a three year contract.
