
(STURGIS) – The Sturgis City Commissioners received an update on a proposed project to bring a restaurant and apartments to the downtown area.
During Wednesday's meeting John Carmichael, President of Root and Branch Real Estate shared that they are going through the design review phase of the project. LINKC.
The plan calls for demolishing the buildings on the sites of 108 to 114 West Chicago Road, which are the homes of Sportsarama, Mike's Pizza and a former Chinese restaurant. A new building will be constructed, which will include a steak house on the ground floor and 25 apartments.
The project will cost $9.1 million. Carmichael says he has been working on getting funding through grants and some loans. He shared with the Commissioners that he was able to secure another grant for the project earlier in the week. LINKD.
The City Commission approved a motion for the City to give $200,000 to the Sturgis Downtown Development Authority to then give to towards the project. The Commission approved a second motion for the DDA to give another $200,000 as well.
