Friday, July 19, 2019

(STURGIS TOWNSHIP) – Two Sturgis men are behind bars after leading police on a chase.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department was dispatched to the area of White School Road near Fawn River Road at 8 PM Wednesday for two motorcycles that were racing. Deputies arrived and located a dirt bike and a crotch rocket style motorcycle. The dirt bike was speeding in a residential area and deputies tried to stop it.

Both bikes fled the area at a high rate of speed with deputies right behind them. It was determined that the suspects parked their motorcycles in a garage in the area of Hazel Street and U.S. 12 and hid from the officers. Deputies were alerted to the suspects' location by bystanders in the area.

Deputies executed a search warrant at a residence in the 25,000 block of U.S. 12 where they found the suspects and arrested them. A 20 year old man was the driver of the dirt bike, and was arrested for fleeing and eluding and was given a ticket for the original speeding infraction.

An 18 year old man was driving the motorcycle. He was arrested for fleeing and eluding and for operating without a motorcycle endorsement. Both were taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.

Deputies were assisted by the Sturgis Police and the Michigan State Police Departments. If anyone has information on this incident, they are asked to call Deputy Mark Mellinger at 269-467-9045, extension 327.
