Crash Numbers Down In 2023 Around St. Joseph County

(CENTREVILLE) – St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman had some information to share Tuesday afternoon.

Bingaman gave the Sheriff’s Department 2023 annual report to the St. Joseph County Commission. He shared that there were nine fatal vehicle crashes in the county last year. That’s up from seven in 2022.

Overall, there were 611 car crashes investigated by the Sheriff’s Department in 2023. That’s down from 2022 when 766 crashed were investigated. Of those crashes, 343 were non-injury incidents and 168 were injury crashes.

Bingaman says there were 245 car-deer crashes in 2023. That’s one more than in 2022.

Sheriff’s Deputies made 48 arrests in 2023 for people who were operating while intoxicated last year. That is down from 2022 when 56 arrests were made.

Bingaman also shared that the daily population at the St. Joseph County Jail is 118 inmates. Of those being held, Bingaman says he estimates as many as 70 percent has either a mental health or substance abuse challenge.
