(CENTREVILLE) – Friday was a special evening at Glen Oaks Community College.
The School held their 56th Commencement ceremonies. 212 students graduated and 160 walked through to receive their diploma, both the largest numbers in the history of the school.
Glen Oaks also recognized seven individuals with awards they give out annually.
The Outstanding Service Award was given to Diane Zinsmaster, who is the Executive Associate to the President.
The Part-Time Faculty Teaching Excellence Award went to Dan Miller, who is the agricultural equipment technology instructor.
The winner of the E.J. Shaheen Chair for Teaching Excellence was given to Michelle McNamara, Professor of Communications. It’s the second time she has won this award.
The Distinguished Alumni Award went to William Lederman. After graduating from Glen Oaks in 1975, he earned other degrees and returned to Glen Oaks in 1986 and was an instructor in the nursing program for 37 years.
The Up And Coming Distinguished Alumni Award went to Alan Albarran, who graduated in 2022.
The Fellows Award was given to Swick Broadcasting’s Mike Stiles. This is given to a person who provides outstanding support to the college.
The 2024 President’s Academic Award was presented to Abigale Youmans. In addition to playing basketball and volleyball for Glen Oaks, she also graduates with a 3.9 grade point average.
Youmans shared with the audience that several people have helped her during her time at Glen Oaks, including faculty and staff, her suite mates and teammates, and especially her family. LINKC.
Youmans will be attending the Michigan State University Vet Nursing Program, where she plans to graduate as a licensed vet tech.
