Michigan basketball offers scholarship to Emoni Bates
Friday, July 19, 2019

(YPSILANTI) – The University of Michigan basketball program has offered one of the top prospects in the country, regardless of class, and he happens to be from the school's backyard. Ypsilanti Lincoln forward Emoni Bates announced that he received an offer from the Wolverines on his Twitter account on Thursday. Bates, who led Lincoln to the Division 1 State Title as a freshman in March, is regarded as one of the top players in the nation. He attended elementary and middle school in Ann Arbor. The offer comes on the heels of Bates' performance with his AAU team, Bates Fundamentals, at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam this past week, where he averaged 32.3 points, 10 rebounds and four assists on 54.5% shooting. U-M was among the few schools to watch Bates at the Peach Jam, along with Michigan State, which extended an offer on Friday. The reason why Bates, touted as the top freshman in the country and one of the best players overall, hasn't received a proportionate amount of interest from colleges: it's unclear whether he'll play at that level. There have been discussions between the NBA, players' union and the NCAA of lowering the draft age to 18, allowing high school players to directly enter the NBA draft. The first year of the rule change could take place with the class of 2022, allowing Bates' to go from high school to the pros. A move that, given his current trajectory, would be expected. Bates, a lanky 6 foot 9 forward, averaged 29.2 points and 10.2 rebounds and was named both the Associated Press Division 1 player of the year and the Gatorade Michigan boys basketball player of the year last season.
