(LANSING) – A bill introduced in Lansing would protect parents’ rights to seek second options for their children’s medical care.
State Representative Jennifer Wortz introduced House Bill 5163 which would prevent parents from being charged with child neglect while they are trying to seek or follow recommendations of a second healthcare professional.
Wortz, a Quincy Republican, says that parents many times want the best care possible for their kids. Getting additional medical advice to help confirm a diagnosis and to determine the best treatment plan possible should be acceptable.
Wortz says that medical professionals shouldn't be allowed to start legal proceedings against parents who are only trying to get the right information.
Wortz also says that doctors are not the parents of the children being brought to them and they may have a financial bias in the recommendations they offer for treatment.
House Bill 5163 has been referred to the House Committee on Families and Veterans for further review.
