(STURGIS TOWNSHIP) – The driver of a motorcycle is in critical condition after his vehicle struck a semi.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says his department was called to the scene of an accident at 4:18 PM Wednesday in the area of South M-66 and Bogen Road, just south of Sturgis.

Deputies determined that a 50 year old Albion, Indiana man was driving his motorcycle south on M-66 when a semi pulled into the intersection, trying to turn north, and the two vehicles collided.

The motorcyclist was flown by Samaritan Air Care to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo and is listed in critical condition. The semi driver, a 60 year old Mendon man, was not injured. Deputies say the motorcycle driver was not wearing a helmet.

The matter is still under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Sturgis Police Department, the Tri-Township Fire Department, Michigan State Police and Life Care Ambulance, along with Sturgis Towing.
