(FLORENCE TOWNSHIP) – A Sturgis man was killed in a one vehicle crash in Florence Township.
St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says just after 5 AM Tuesday, his department responded to the area of Featherstone and Sevison Roads for a single vehicle accident. When deputies arrived, they found 49 year old Randy Caruthers of Sturgis dead in the automobile.
Investigators determined that Caruthers was driving his pick up east on Featherstone Road when he lost control of the vehicle, went off the road on the right side and struck a tree. It's believed that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Assisting deputies at the scene were the Constantine Fire Department, Life Care Ambulance and the Western Michigan University Medical Examiner's Office.
